Softkeys are state sensitive keys that change depending on the state of the phone and are used to perform different functions when the phone is an idle, connected, outgoing, or busy state.
The label adjacent to the key indicates the function a softkey performs at any given time.
For example, when you call a busy extension the phone presents a softkey allowing you to request a Callback. In a different state, the same key could be used to set up a conference call.
